Make this Excerpt Free? The Make this Excerpt Free field (Figure 93) allows you to create an easy strategy for promoting your full online Documents by giving small bits of content away in the form of a free Excerpt. Making an Excerpt free does not require users to register on your website, but creates a publicly visible Excerpt. The Make this Excerpt Free setting interacts with the Make this Document Free setting on the Document Properties screen. On the Document Properties screen, if the Make this Document Free field is set to “No” (which is the default setting), then setting the Make the Excerpt Free field to “yes” will create a free Excerpt. On the Document Properties screen, if the Make this Document Free field is set to “Yes,” then that setting will override the Excerpt’s free setting and any Excerpt associated with the original Document will automatically be free. User Tip: If you want to gather User information (such as name, email address, etc.) and force a registration on your web site in exchange for free access to the Excerpt, leave this field with the default setting of No and then create a free Offer. Note: The appearance of the FREE icon next to a particular Table of Contents (TOC) entry is controlled by whatever Excerpt starts on the exact same page as is referenced by that TOC entry. So for example, if you want a FREE icon to appear next to page 2 of a Document’s TOC, then the Excerpt you create must begin on page 2 (and go to page X). See Figure 94.
