Appendix A Resolution and Compression Setting Guidelines for Scanned PDFs If your organization is planning to scan PDFs for Tizra upload, we’ve created these guidelines for scanning vendors. Note: There are always trade-offs when optimizing PDF files for online viewing: as speed increases, image quality goes down. These scanning guidelines were created as a means of balancing those trade-offs for scanned PDFs. Your organization can always optionally request that the conversion vendor make iterative changes to the resolution and compression settings suggested below. You can then upload those changed PDFs into Tizra and test for the best speed vs. image quality that meets your organization’s needs. Black & White Text and Black & White Line Art By limiting color depth, it is possible to scan at very high resolution, which usually yields the best and most readable results.  Color Depth: 1-bit (black & white)  Target resolution: 600 dpi (going down to 200 dpi should still be OK in most cases)  Image format: Run-length or other lossless encoding (NOT lossy, such as JPEG) Black and White Text with Grayscale Figures or Effects  Color Depth: 8-bit (grayscale)  Target resolution: 220 dpi  Image format: Run-length or other lossless encoding (NOT lossy, such as JPEG) Color Photographs/Continuous Tone Images  Color Depth: 24-bit  Target resolution: 150-180 dpi  Image Format: Lossy compression (jpeg a little better than jpeg2000) Color Photographs/Continuous Tone Images Combined with Text  Please contact Tizra for guidelines !

View the Font number in parentheses If the number is in the 100s, this is very likely the cause of any slow page rendering and should be fix immediately. Proceed to step 8. OR If the number is within a normal range – 5 to 10 fonts – be sure to spot check a few more of the PDF’s pages to see if their Font number is also within normal range.
