OTHER SOLUTIONS CONSIDERED With the goal of finding a publishing platform that would support a more active feedback loop, ARL looked at alternatives including Open Journal Systems from Public Knowledge Project and DPubs from Cornell and Penn State. They narrowed down their options based on internal requirements including: Support for existing publication formats, including ability to work with PDFs. A full e-commerce platform that allows ARL to charge for some publications and offer others for free, with support for both password- and IP-authenticated access for individual users or entire organizations. Mobile responsive design to support the fastest growing segment of its user base—tablet owners. Full-text searching including relevancy ranking and linking to specific pages in search and social sharing. Support for ARL’s digital accessibility mandates. After extensive testing and experimentation, including an extended public beta, ARL found that the Tizra solution best met their requirements and moved into production, starting with its flagship newsletter, Research Libraries Issues. “We selected Tizra because of their outstanding customer service,” said Kaylyn Groves, Communications Program Officer at ARL. “They have always been very responsive to both our needs and the needs of our customers.” “With Tizra, we didn’t need to make immediate changes to the way we produced our content because they were able to take our existing PDFs into the system,” said George.
